Heat and computers

Today we discuss the issues with heat and how it can affect a computer.

Heat damage can be sever to some components, hard drives, CPU's, and memory. A computer generates a fair amount of heat due tot he electricity going through it's circuits. The fan(s) that are installed in the case dissipate most of this heat and keep everything at a safe temperature. However, environmental issues can cause added heat, problems such as dust build up, blocked air flow, or poor placement can all have a severe impact on a computers ability to stay cool.

Always be sure to remove the side panel of your computer (very easy on most cases) and blow out the dust that accumulates every few months. Be sure to go to a store and buy canned air in the computer and electronics section (walmart even carries it). Do not use an air compressor, the hi pressure air is not good.

Be sure nothing is blocking the vents on the case, this restricts the flow of air through the case. Also, be sure the case is in a well ventilated area (especially in the case of a server that has multiple hard drives and generates a lot of heat).

If you are unsure of the cooling ability, some cases offer the ability of adding cooling fans, and gamaing systems can be liquid cooled if needed.

Virus removal

Today's topic is virus removal, a very hot topic with plenty of companies trying to get a piece of the action. The facts are, effective virus removal must be done by a technician in front of your computer, remote access (via the T.V. ads) cannot fully clean a computer. No one can really clear all the infections in 30 minutes, some scans take a few hours. There is not a one scan fits all program, in many cases it takes scanning the computer multiple times with multiple programs to get all traces of a virus cleaned.

So, if you think you have a virus, call a local tech, be sure they are thorough, and avoid the big box stores, they tend to try and sell you their services which are rarely more than a virus in themselves.
